Bauer Meat Company E. coli Litigation

The Marler Clark law firm represented a child who became ill with an E. coli O157:H7 infection after eating an E. coli-contaminated hamburger for school lunch at Danielsville Elementary School in Madison County, Georgia, in 1998.  The child, who is a type-one diabetic, suffered permanent kidney damage after developing hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) secondary to his E. coli infection. 

The public health investigation into the child’s illness led to the conclusion that ground beef supplied to Danielsville Elementary and served for school lunch was the source of the E. coli outbreak.  Further epidemiologic evidence and records from the school revealed that the ground beef was supplied by Bauer Meat of Ocala, Florida.  Federal officials closed the Bauer Meats plant, and announced that the company was recalling 38,000 pounds of ground beef that had been distributed to schools, military bases, and other institutions in Georgia and North Carolina for potential E. coli contamination.
